Let’s be honest—parenting today is a minefield.
Screens. Entitlement. Anxiety.
You want to raise a child who is resilient,
Psychological entitlement is characterized by expecting success without effort—leading to absenteeism, truancy, cheating—with documented links to higher academic entitlement (nature.com).
Children who grow up expecting praise for minimal effort often develop a sense of “instant entitlement,” believing “rules don’t apply to me." (focusonthefamily.com)
Studies link helicopter parenting to decreased confidence, poor coping skills, higher anxiety/depression, inflated entitlement, and lack of life skills (parents.com).
A study found 20–25% of teens face major depression, with another 40% struggling with serious symptoms. Encouraging spiritual engagement bolstered resilience, grit, and self‑worth (time.com).
The good news...
Students with engaged parents are 81% more likely to graduate high school (positiveaction.net).
Actively involved parents reduce the likelihood of nightmares in children, low self-esteem, and school-based misconduct (aecf.org).
I taught in a great school—one that used to hold high expectations, reinforce accountability, and had supportive parents. But over time, that shifted. Not because the kids changed, but because we stopped expecting more. We stopped holding the line.
We started making excuses.
Society told us kids were too anxious, too confused, too fragile to expect much from. That they shouldn’t have to face hard truths or clear boundaries.
That failure would damage their self-esteem and consequences were too harsh. That girls might really be boys. That every kid deserves a trophy.
That expecting respect was asking too much.
And little by little, we gave in.
Parents stopped making hard calls. Administrators lost their spine.
They gave the culture what it wanted—no matter the cost. Teachers were told to back off. And in the absence of leadership, society—loud, confused,
and often wrong—took over the job of raising kids. The more we backed off, the more kids drifted. And no one stopped to ask what that silence was costing the kids.
